"The process of Empowering others to heal themselves"

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words, " Rei " (pronounced Ray) meaning Universal, and " Ki " meaning life energy. Many other civilisations have been aware of and used this energy. It is known as Chi to the Chinese, Ka to the ancient Egyptians, and Wakan or Wadouda to the Sioux Indians. Martial artists have been aware of and used this remarkable force for uncounted generations.

Where are it's origins?

Reiki is an ancient form of healing which is believed to come from Tibet, although some records date Reiki back around 5,000 years to India. For hundreds of years its secrets were lost and forgotten but were discovered again in the nineteenth century by a Japanese monk named Dr Mikao Usui. He discovered ancient Sanskrit formulas and symbols in old Buddhist sutras. He analysed their contents and after many days of thought and meditation he realised that he had rediscovered the simple but powerful art of healing which he called Reiki. This was lost in the 'East' for many years until the 1970's and it was brought into the 'West' by Mrs Hawayo Takata.

Ki is simply a life force that exists in all created matter. There are many types of Ki energy. Reiki can be understood as the channeling of natures own healing power. There is nothing religious, mystical, or supernatural about it, it can be given to both plants and animals, it is a simple technique to learn and practise. It can do no harm, and can be used with and to enhance any other form of treatment including allopathic (conventional) medicines, although these should be discussed with the therapist prior to the session.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of Reiki are manifold. It promotes and accelerates the healing process. It is an effective form of pain relief and can be used to treat all illnesses serious or minor. It cleanses the body of toxins and is both vitalising and relaxing. Reiki has also been used to help the following:

  • Reduce stress
  • Promote relaxation
  • Release repressed traumas and worries
  • Increase energy levels
  • Relieve aching muscles
  • Relieve headaches
  • Promote cell, muscle and even bone repair
  • Considerably promote healing times (up to 25 times faster!)

How might it help me?

Let's take an example, if you had a hole in your bicycle inner tube, would you repair it with a patch of paper and PVA glue, or would you use a patch of rubber, and rubber cement? By the same understanding, everything living can be found to be made of energy (think quantum physics if you can) and if it is made of energy, it requires energy to grow, build, and repair. Normally, this energy is gained indirectly through food, liquid, sunlight, air, etc.

Reiki is found to balance this energy within, 'feeding' it with more energy wherever it may be required. This may be thought of as seeing the body as a network of streams and tributaries (or energy meridians) flowing energy throughout the body, wherever there are blockages, then the Reiki energy can act as a catalyst to clear these blockages, thereby helping the body heal itself.

There are no guarantees to the success of Reiki, as the process relies on the client working with the therapist as much as the therapist working with the client. However, as most therapists will agree, if you are not satisfied, then any gift you have given for the session, will gladly be refunded upon your request.

How long does it take?

The length of time for each session can vary, just as the number of sessions varies per individual. 'Treatments' have been known to last only minutes for a 'quick fix', whilst others have been known to last many hours. A 'full Reiki treatment' (covering the 12 positions) typically lasts just over an hour. However for your first session, please allow extra time to discuss a number of areas with the therapists.

How does it feel?

Some individuals, while receiving Reiki see various images or colours, some report sensations of heat or warmth, others gain a feeling of a gentle breeze washing gently over their bodies. Some feel tingling, or the feeling of soft bubble like feelings, a magnetic energy, physical contact even if there is none. Some feel absolutely nothing, but keep on finding themselves coming back for more, for some intangible reason. However, one feeling seems common to all, and that is a feeling of blissful relaxation that fills the entire being. If you really want to know, then the best way to find out is to try it for yourself.

What happens during a session?

Reiki is given by applying the hands to, or around certain parts of the body. This is done without the client having to remove any items of clothing. It adjusts itself to the client's needs both in terms of how much the client will absorb and in which part of the body it will flow to. It knows what the client needs and will act accordingly, thus eliminating the need for lengthy diagnosis. It is in fact not unusual for a client seeking a cure for a minor ailment to report an improvement in a long term condition that the Reiki practitioner knew nothing about.

Do you have to believe in Reiki for it to work?

You do not need to believe in Reiki for it to have a positive effect. To demonstrate, Reiki is used successfully to treat plants, animals, and young children. All that is required is to maintain an open mind, relax, and have a genuine wish to be assisted.
